Making money by creating Android apps

While the iPhone started the mobile apps craze, Android is fast becoming the leader in the smartphone market. There are millions of new Android phones activated every month, and Android is now by far the most used smartphone OS out there. So it’s no wonder that many people are now looking at this type of device to make money. It’s quite possible for you to learn how to create Android apps, and make money.

First, you need to decide what type of apps you want to make. Will it be a game, or a standard app? Games typically need graphics, so if you can’t make your own art, then perhaps you will need to partner with someone who can. Also, if you can’t program, you will either need to learn, or stick to making very simple apps. There are websites out there that have an easy to use interface which can basically turn a mobile web site into a native app. With these, you can literally have an Android app made inside of a day. Of course, those simple apps are not likely to sell well, and if you’re serious about wanting to become an Android developer, you need to learn how to write code.

Android apps are made using Java, so the first step is to learn Java programming. There are many books out there that can teach you, and online you can find information about Android API calls. You will need to download the Android SDK, which is a set of libraries you will use to create your app. This SDK also comes with an emulator, so even if you don’t have an actual Android device, you can still test it while on your computer. At the start, Android programming can be challenging, but it gets easier once you become familiar with the various ways things are done, like calls to the menus, device features, and so on.

Once your app is done and you’ve tested it, then it’s time to submit it. Google runs a Marketplace where anyone can submit apps to sell. To become a developer you need to pay a one time fee of $25 to Google, and then you can submit as many apps as you want. There is no review process, and as soon as you upload your signed app, along with a description and images, the app will appear in the Marketplace within a couple of hours. Once your app is available for all, you can then see the money come in, assuming people buy it.

Overall, it’s possible to make good money with Android apps, but you need to have smart ideas, and well designed apps. Remember that there’s thousands of apps, and most subjects have been covered already. Games usually sell best, along with apps that are priced very low. If you can get over the initial learning curve, you can make this into a full time job.
